My Approach to Training
At Seaside Dog Academy, my approach to training is balanced, fair and focused on clear communication between dogs and their owners. I believe dogs thrive when they understand what is expected of them, and when good choices are consistently encouraged and reinforced in a clear and meaningful way.
My work is grounded in simple learning principles, often referred to as operant conditioning. In practical terms, this means helping dogs understand which behaviours are rewarding and beneficial, and which choices come with clear and consistent consequences. This clarity helps dogs feel more secure, reduces confusion and allows learning to take place with confidence.
Training sessions are always tailored to the individual dog and the real-life situations they face. I take into account temperament, environment, routine and the needs of the owner, ensuring that training is practical, achievable and relevant beyond the session itself.
I believe effective training is not about quick fixes or rigid methods, but about consistency, fairness and understanding. My aim is to provide honest, practical guidance that helps owners feel confident, informed and supported as they build calm, respectful and trusting relationships with their dogs.

Toby (BSc, BCCSDip.AdvCan Bhv)
Hello, I’m Toby, a British College of Canine Studies Certified Dog Behaviourist, Modern Dog Trainer, and First Aid Practitioner. Over the past year, I’ve dedicated myself to intensive study and practical training with my dog, Max, including completing the Reactive to Off-Lead programme through Hamilton Dog Training. I’ve also continued to learn from leading professionals across the industry, expanding my knowledge and refining my approach to real-world dog behaviour and training.
Alongside this, my background in coaching and leadership helps me guide owners clearly and confidently, breaking training down into practical steps tailored to each dog and household. I focus on clarity, consistency, and support, ensuring owners feel capable and informed as they implement strategies for their dogs’ success.
My mission is simple: to keep dogs in happy, fulfilling homes and out of shelters, while helping owners build calm, respectful, and confident relationships with their dogs. I look forward to meeting you and your dog, and helping you create a strong, trusting partnership that lasts a lifetime.

Max
Max is my dog and training partner, the dog who taught me so much about behaviour, patience, and communication. When I first started working with him, he had his challenges, reactive in some situations, uncertain in others and over time, through consistent training and understanding, he has become confident, reliable, and a joy to work with.
Max now helps me demonstrate techniques, illustrate learning principles, and guide owners through practical, real-world training scenarios. While he still has the occasional moment, his journey from reactive to off-lead shows what is possible with patience, clarity, and a structured approach.
Beyond training, Max is a constant reminder of why I do this work: to help dogs and owners live happy, fulfilling lives together. He embodies the values of trust, respect, and partnership that underpin everything I teach at Seaside Dog Academy.
